where to eat

Photo: Jumping Jenny cafe at Brantwood by Coniston Water

The "Jumping Jenny Coffee House and Restaurant" at Brantwood, the "Bluebird Cafe by the Lake", or the "Waterhead Hotel" with its own jetty, all provide excellent food and are accessible by Coniston Launch. No picnics in the boat cabins please.

Jumping Jenny

Perhaps slightly confusingly named after Ruskin's boat, this is the bistro/restaurant at Brantwood run by Chris and Gillie Addison. The food is all home-made and the standard is first rate. The restaurant is a conversion of the old stables (there is a large wood-burning stove) and in all but the worst weather you can also sit outside on the terrace - with its superb lake views. Groups should note that it is essential to book (015394 41715) and that groups of more than 25 people are most likely to be asked to eat in two sittings - see www.jumpingjenny.com/.

Bluebird Cafe

Situated at Coniston Boatlandings, this excellent 'beach cafe' has a wide variety of good value hot snacks, sandwiches, ice creams, etc. The proprietors, Phil and Judith Dixon and their staff provide rapid service - and the place is kept spotless - see www.thebluebirdcafe.co.uk/ .

Waterhead Hotel

This large, comfortable hotel is the only one on Coniston Water with its own lake access - and with a jetty that we call at on an hourly basis. The hotel is available for morning coffee, light lunches, and afternoon tea. It is also available by prior booking (015394 41244) for larger groups who have booked our launch - possibly to take them to Brantwood. See www.waterhead-hotel.co.uk/.

picnics

There are several opportunities for informal picnics around the lake. We would recommend Torver for those who enjoy wooded glades, or Sunny Bank if you prefer an open beach with fell access. If you are walking from Water Park to Brantwood and really want a table (!) then you can use the Rigg Wood site that is owned by the Forestry Commission. One other possibility is Lake Bank with its wide jetty and historical association with the lake steamers.

Please feel free to discuss your requirements with our crew - oh yes and PLEASE take your litter home!
